GET READY FOR LOBSTER SEASON!!!!!

Tom Campbell with new member Ed Traylor's 29" Hogfish shot in 35' of water.  A nice black grouper topped off that dive as well.

On August 22, 2009, Members and friends of the South Florida Spearfishing Club volunteered to clean up the area around the fishing pier. Miles of monofilament and hundreds of pounds of lead were removed from the area as well as bottles, cans, fishing gear, etc.

SFSC Member Steve Schoepp with his first lionfish kill.

I found this Lionfish in 15' of water near a rock in the channel at Samson Cay. It was slack tide. The Channel gets as deep as 25' and is loaded with Coral heads, rocks, ledges and coral gardens. The problem is the current - it rips from the Bahamas Bank to Exuma Sound and back. The only time to hunt it is during slack tide.

When I came across the lionfish, I was hunting a large (50 lb.??) Black Grouper. He played cat-and -mouse around the same rock in the channel until he gave me the slip. I know the coral head he calls home; I am going back at slack tide today to find him.
